When we know that we are loved perfectly, the fear of broken relationships, and trying to measure up to invisible standards fades away. When we are loved perfectly, there is not more fear.
The problem with most forms of human love is that we are not loved perfectly. We hide things about our past, about our thoughts, about certain things we have done or think. Why do we hide them? Because we are afraid that if others found out about these things, they would leave us, or even hate us. We keep our secrets, and so our secrets keep others from fully knowing us, and so we are unable to fully experience love.
Of course, as human beings, we do struggle with loving others when we know their deepest and darkest secrets. It is important that when others share with us their deepest and darkest secrets that we do not judge and condemn them, for we would not want them to condemn us, and love covers over a multitude of sins.
But regardless of how imperfectly we love others and others love us, there is one person who loves us completely and perfectly, and that is God. Numerous Scriptures in the Bible tell us about this, but one Scripture on Love which talks about God’s perfect love for us is 1 John 4:18-19.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love Him because He first loved us.
When we fear, it is because we do not know how much we are loved. When we realize that God knows everything about us, including our past, our present, and our future, and everything we have thought and did, but He loves us anyway, any fear we may have about losing His love fades away, and when there is no fear, we are free to love God more completely and fully, and also show love to others.
This Scripture shows us that when we come to know the love of God in this way, we can love others completely also, because God has shown us the way of love.
