There are always lots of questions in Christian circles about which characteristics are best for the Christian to follow. Some think that the most important thing is to believe the right doctrines. Other think that looking forward to the return of Jesus is most important, because it causes us to live rightly in this world. Others state that the most important thing is how we represent Jesus to others.
One Scripture on Love which helps solve this debate is 1 Corinthians 13:13.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Faith is important because it is how we receive eternal life and gain entrance into the family of God. There is no denying the importance of faith.
Similarly, hope is vital for our life as a follower of Jesus. This world is full of hardship and trials, and hope for a better future and the return of Jesus Christ makes all things easier to bear. There is no denying the importance of hope.
But according to Paul, the greatest of all is love. Love for God and love for others is how we fulfill the law. Love is how we show others that we are followers of Jesus. Love is how the Kingdom of heaven is brought upon the earth. Love is how we reflect Jesus to the world. If we have faith and hope, but have not love, we are nothing. Love enables us to imitate God and reveal Him to others in this world.
The greatest of all is love.
