Do you ever feel like your whole world is crashing down? This is a common human experience in this life, and when it happens, we often need encouragement to keep going and to keep following Jesus.
In John 14-16, the disciples of Jesus receive some bad news. Jesus tells them that He is going to die, that they will all abandon Him, that He is going to leave them and where He is going they cannot come, and that pretty much all their hopes and dreams of the arrival of the Messianic kingdom are about to shatter at their feet.
It is a difficult thing to experiences, when your life comes crashing down around you.
Encouragement from Jesus
Yet in the middle of all of this, Jesus offers some great encouragement. He says this in John 14:27:
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
This is a Scripture on Encouragement that was music to the ears of the disciples, and helpful for us as well.
Jesus does not want us to be troubled when life goes bad, or to be afraid when all our hopes and dreams die. No, Jesus wants us to experience peace, His peace. He wants us to know that He has not left us alone, that He is in charge and knows what He is doing, even if it seems chaotic, confused, and disappointing to us. As we trust in Him, He gives us peace and encouragement to follow Him in faith wherever it is He leads.
So be encouraged and follow Jesus through the darkness, through the fear, through the uncertainty and doubt. He will not lead you astray.
