One of the main causes of depression in the world today is anxiety about past mistakes and an uncertain future.
In such times of depression, it is helpful to be reminded from the Scriptures that all of our lives are guided and directed by the Lord. When it seems He has abandoned and forgotten us, this is not the case, and He is only taking us through a storm of life to teach us something, or lead us in a new direction.
One Scripture on Depression which reveals this is Psalm 37:23-24. It says this:
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
From this verse, we learn several things.
Steps of a Good Man
First, it is only the steps of a good man that are ordered, or guided, by the Lord. Though God does desire to guide the steps of all people, we can also rebel against God and travel in directions which He does not desire. So if we are deliberately heading off into sin and rebellion, we cannot say that God is guiding us into such directions. And sin often results in depression, so if sin is causing emotional despair, we would be wise forsake the sin, which may provide freedom from depression by itself.
Though he Fall
When we are following God’s path, and we fall, whether we make a mistake and sin, or we face anxiety, fear, depression, or some of the other pitfalls of life, God will not forsake us or abandon us, but will uphold us with His hand. He will keep us safe and will protect and comfort us in our times of despair.
If you are facing a time of depression, know that God is with you and will not let you be utterly cast down.
