People are facing great depression and anxiety in today’s world. There are so many things which cause worry, doubt, and fear. The economy, world wars, uncertain future, parenting issues, marriage problems, job uncertainty, finances, health, and a whole host of other things.
And all of these things can lead to depression. It is difficult to have a good feeling about life and look forward to the future when there is so much anxiety about the future. And the more anxiety we have, the greater our depression becomes.
And so it is is helpful when facing anxiety and the depression that accompanies it to find sources of encouragement and hope. One of the greatest sources is Scripture. The Scriptures help with depression by providing encouragement, promises from God, hope for the future, and guidance for times of testing in life.
One great Scripture on Depression which shows this is Proverbs 12:25.
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.
This Scripture shows that anxiety causes depression, and cure, according to this Bible verse, is hearing a good word.
A good word can come from numerous sources. We can get a good and encouraging word from friends or family members. We can hear good news about our job, or our financial picture. But such good words are usually more rare than we would like.
So one of the greatest and most reliable sources of encouraging words is the Scriptures. Whenever we are depressed or anxious, we can turn to Scripture for help and hope.
Are you depressed today? Open the Scriptures to one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John), or start reading some of the Psalms, and let God encourage you today through His Word.
