When dealing with depression it seems like there is nothing good in life. All appears grey, dull, and lifeless. The past is full of dark shadows and the future only fearful uncertainty. It is impossible to laugh, even at the best of jokes, difficult to smile, even for someone you love.
But one thing that many people have learned when they experience depression is that while many of our problems and worries can be overwhelming, God has filled this world with many simple pleasures which can lift our spirits temporarily, and over time, maybe even help left us out of the pit of despair.
One Scripture on depression that talks about some of these simple pleasures is Nehemiah 8:10.
Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our LORD. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
There are two areas of life we can focus on which will be helpful in lifting our spirits and easing the dullness of depression.
Food and Drink
Nehemiah 8:10 talks about eating the fat and drinking the sweet. People who experience depression have long known that food and drink can be a source of solace and comfort. Many people overdo it by eating and drinking too much, and then develop other problems with often lead to greater depression.
But with some care and balance, good food and drink can help ease depression.
Service to Others
The other area that Nehemiah 8:10 talks about is bringing portions to those for whom nothing is prepared. In other words, taking some of the food and drink to the the poor and hungry. There are numerous benefits to helping others when facing depression.
First, it often provides some perspective, that we are not alone with our problems, and others have problems too.
Second, one cause of depression can be that we are focusing too much on ourselves. If we begin to look outside ourselves, and seek to meet the needs of others, this can help the depression fade away. Helping others is a great way to overcome depression. Seeing others smile or hearing them say thanks often provides a bit of joy and happiness that brings life and joy back into the soul.
