Sometimes as followers of Jesus, we get depressed because the life of following Jesus seems harder and more difficult than the life without Jesus. Someone might have told us that Jesus will solve all our problems, fix all our finances, heal all our relationships, and in general, make life like a bed of roses.
The problem is that all such teachings are lies. Though it is true that life with Jesus is better than life without Him, it is not true that life is easier. To the contrary, life is much harder. The sooner we realize this the better, because then we can begin to view life with the proper perspective, which helps combat the disillusionment and depression we sometimes face when following Jesus only seems to lead to despair and darkness.
And yet in the face of tribulations and difficulties, we can still have peace. Look what Jesus says in John 16:33.
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
How can following Jesus be full of tribulation, but also full of peace?
Because, as Jesus says, He has overcome the world. Nothing that the world does to us can have the final victory over us, because Jesus is victorious. He has conquered sin, death, and the devil.
Therefore, when all life fall apart around us, we can still live with peace and good cheer, and not fall into depression or anxiety, because no matter what, in Jesus Christ, we too have overcome the world.
