The Scripture reference says this:
But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
What Paul writes is shocking and surprising. It comes in three steps.
Jesus is the Son of God
This is not shocking or surprising, as it is something that most people recognize and admit. This does not, however, mean that Jesus is God. Jesus is God incarnate, but the title “Son of God” does not mean this. The title simply means that Jesus is the progeny of God, or of the family of God, with all of the special rights and privileges that go with such this family connection.
Jesus Was Born Under the Law
Usually, royal families are somewhat exempt from the law. Kings and kingly families make the law, and in ancient times were above the law. The strange thing with Jesus is that though He was of the Kingly family and therefore above the law, He put Himself under the law. He subjected Himself to the law!
Why would any royal person do such a thing? Paul tells us why:
Jesus Wanted to make all of us Sons of God
Jesus did not want to keep His special status as a Son of God to Himself, but wanted to share this status with all of us. Though He was “born” into the family, He opened the way for us to be adopted into the family of God. Again, this does not mean that we become divine. Instead, being adopted as one of God’s children means that we share in all the rights and privileges of being in the family of God, including one of the most amazing privileges: being able to approach God and call Him “Father.”
We take this privilege for granted, but imagine what it means to be able to call the Creator of the Universe “Father”! Created beings do not call their Creator “Father.” We might call God “Master” or “Lord” but never “Father.” And yet, this is what Jesus accomplished through His birth, life, death, and resurrection.
Scripture reveals that because of the birth of Jesus, we can call God “Father.”
